About Us

Dear Discover Skagway Tours,

My son, 19, my mother, 96, and I took tour "Traditional Tour" on Monday, August 17.

We all want to thank you for providing such a wonderful experience.

Gwen, you understood my concerns about getting my elderly mother on the bus and provided the perfect solution. Our guide met us at the pier within a minute of our arrival; he took over the care of my mother, stowed her wheelchair and got her on the bus with a minimum of fuss.

The tour was fun and interesting in spite of our rainy weather. Dave, our driver and guide, just had a wealth of information about everything we saw on the tour. He inspired me to look up more information about Soapy Smith and to go to our local library for books by Pierre Berton and short stories by Jack London. And I am appreciative of Dave's ability to quote long massages from poetry and literature, especially from London's "The White Silence." What an inspiration for my son - someone can be a kool dude and still love reading - such a concept!

Hi,

Just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed the tour last week. We had Dave Andrews who was fantastic. He had knowledge and his heart in the tour. My wife and I thought the cemetary part would be boring but we were both surprised and enjoyed. Again thanks for the great tour and Dave the guide. We will always have good memories of the beautiful sights we saw.

Hi,

I wanted to let you know what a wonderful experience my wife and I had on our recent Gwen's Tour. I'm sure that Gwen will remember us as the newly weds from Texas. We saw and did a lot of things on our cruise, but I wanted to let you know that the courtesy and professionalism Gwen and Ti extended to us made our trip to Skagway unforgettable. Not only was this tour the most professional and courteous, but it was also the best value of anything we did on our entire honeymoon. Thanks for the wonderful treatment. I have already referred three friends that are leaving for this cruise to make sure they take your tour (and try the rhubarb champagne). Please feel free to use us as a reference for anyone wanting to check you out.

Hi,

If I had some more vacation time we would be back in Sept. You will see us again next year. The weather was great but that probably lead to the fires I really was disappointed with my pictures due to the smoke. Jewel and I were impressed with her knowledge of the flowers. We have to say even with the trouble that Gwen had with some of the passengers. Her tour was one of the three best tours on our trip!!!!

Hi,

We took the Charlie's Tour on July 18th. I just wanted to tell you that we had a great time. Gwen was our tour guide, and she was wonderful. Not pushy - listen and answered to all questions - took the time for pictures. Made the tour very enjoyable. We also had a great time at the Days of '98 Show. It was the high point of the day. After all the beautiful scenery that is.

Thank you for making it a great day.

Hi,

Kathy and I drove from Wisconsin to Alaska and took the super tour on June 15th. We took the Super Tour and just loved it. Kathy just finished scrap booking the trip to Alaska and the tour we took with Gwen and the "other" guy was just great. We also thought the Days of '98 show was one of the best while in Alaska. I really liked the information both Gwen and the "other guy" provided while on the tour. All the people associated with the company, especially Gwen, could not have been more friendly and informative. Thanks for a great time in Skagway.

Gwen,

We've been home a couple of days now and as we put it all together, we concluded that because of you, and your excellant tour, Skagway has become our favorite stop. You are a never ending fountain of information on your area, and your frequent stops for photo opps was much appreciated. Sherry thanks you too for your consideration of her fear of heights and the forewarnings you provided. She loved the Jewell Grdens, nd I noticed that you both seemed to learn from each other, how neat. I will reccomend you to others heading your way, have a great tourist season, we wish you well and thanks again. Ted & Sherry Pappas Green Bay, Wi. PS: I would have no problem if you wanted to publish these remarks, after all they are what brought us to your tour.

Hi,

We took the traditional tour with your company last August and loved it. Are recommending it to friends, but can't remember the name of the great guide. He's an adventuresome mountain man with lots of personal stories. He also recites poetry while driving. He was fabulous. Know who?
Thanks for your help.

Lewis,

Just wanted to send a thank-you note to Gwen for the wonderful tour we had with her on June 2nd, 2009. It was by far the best tour we had while in Alaska. We (all eight of us) really enjoyed the Days of 98 show, the gardens and beautiful scenic areas. I wanted to post a thank-you on your site but didn't see where I could post it. Thank-you again for making our day very special...

Hi,

Just wanted you to know that the tour was excellent! I was so glad that I hadn't cancelled. Our tour guide was informative, congenial and made an extra effort to keep things interesting. The views were spectacular--I just loved it!

Lewis,

Thank you for your assistance. Wanted you to know the tour we took with Discover Skagway was the best Excursion of all we took on our Alaskan cruise .Cody did an incredible job and amazed us with wealth of information on many subjects.
Wishing you and your crew a great season.

Take care,

Donel Etter

Dear Lewis and Gwen,

We want to thank you for your wonderful Charlie tour. We were in Skagway on Thursday, May 25th and met Gwen at the Days of ’98 Show. Afterwards we were treated to a very special ride up White Pass with your driver, Mike, he was truly a gem and very informative and entertaining. Having a tour guide who lived in the area gave us a great sense of what it is like to live there - very different from NJ .Mike is at the top of our list as best tour guide by far on our Alaskan trip!
Thank you again,

Barbara, Drew and Lauren Homack

Hi Gwen Hi Charlie

We are finally back from our week on summit followed by three days in Anchorage with friends. I have been telling all of our Cruise Critic board friends how much we enjoyed our tour with you ….how good Gwen and Charlie are - how you both live in Skagway – how you go out of your way to help and please your customers .
Thanks again for a memorable experience out and about Skagway. May you have a profitable and enjoyable season,

Les and Pat Dickasons

Dear Gwen,

Thank you for the wonderful tour of Skagway. Touring as our own group was ideal, and we are especially grateful for all the great family photos. You are a good photographer! Attached is one you took of us at the Alaska sign. Remember how foggy it was?!? A little Photoshop adjustment eliminated of some of it-ha!
Hope your summer went well. Best of luck to you and Lewis.

Sincerely,

Carolyn (& all those McMullens!)

Gwen,

Thank you so much for a GREAT tour! Our group of six were so pleased to see Skagway without using the “big” bus. You made our tour very personal indeed.
Keep up the good work and we hope to visit Skagway again sometime!

Thank you,

Sheryl Bielewicz & the family

Hi Guys,

It has been a couple of weeks since we took your Skagway tour with Ty. I thought we should tell you how great we all thought he was and what a wonderful tour we had. We were the first group of season and no doubt everyone needed to work out the kinks but it was smooth sailing from start to finish for us. Ty entertained not only with the history of the area but by reciting some of Robert Service’s poetry and telling stories of Jack London. Thanks for the memories and I am sure we will return to Skagway for a third time in the not too distant future.
Best wishes for a great year.

Bruce

Hi there Gwen and Lewis

Thanks so much for hosting us on Gwen’s tour , we had a great time. Please pass on our thanks too Tynan who did a great job. Currently I’m compiling a log of our trip on cruise critic. I haven’t got to Skagway yet, but rest assured there will be some glowing words about discover Skagway. At the end of our tour I was looking back on all our places visited and considered that Skagway was my most favourite town. I think it’s great that the town is doing so much to try to hold onto its heritage without resolving to tacky ideas. Through your activities it seems to me that your company is doing it’s share to promote that feel. Although we didn’t get to see your show, we did see the girls hanging out the window singing to the passing hordes. Hope you don’t mind that a full verse of “Take Me out to the Ball Game found it’s way onto my video camera! Friends who have seen it said it really gelled with their idea of a Klondike frontier town!
Keep up the good work but don’t roast in Florida Gwen

All the best

So why was Skagway our favorite port of call?

Discover Skagway is linked to the Days of 98 Show and as their offices are towards the rear of the theatre we went in and met up with Gwen who was to start of our tour. Gwen was completely in her element in the fascinating setting of Jewell Gardens.

On leaving Jewell Garden we teamed up with another guide Tynan to ascend the White Pass just beyond the summit.

He has a wealth of knowledge about the pass, including its history, geography and wildlife. He proved to be an excellent guide. In telling us about the pass he constantly weaved references to jack London, Colonel Moore and other old time pioneers into the commentary to paint an excellent illustration of the challenges of White Pass.

Stops were made at many landmarks and we took loads of photographs of the valleys and falls such as Bridal Falls, Pitchfork Falls, Cammack and International Falls.

He would stop and point out wildlife such as mountain sheep.

Back down in Skagway Tynan took us to the overlook where we got a grandstand view of Skagway Airport complete with no control tower. That left time to call in on the Klondike Cemetery and tales of the demise of Soapy Smith.

A fantastic trip on which we learned so much. It left me with no regrets about not doing the Railway trip as i'm not sure I would have heard and seen so much, and I doubt if my own questions would have been answered as readily as they were by our excellent guide. i'd recommend Discover Skagway any time - great job done!
